Punjabi vs Malay?

Last saturday i attended an in-house training (school level). They asked us to wear 'baju koprat" which i dont have, cos when they were busy ordering i was pregnant and refused to be measured. lol...So, till now i still dont have one cos i see it's not worth it. Very unattractive. So , for the training, i decided to wear a similar colour to that of baju keparat...ooopsss...
Anyhow, i only have my green colour punjabi suit that really matches their 'baju'. So, thinking it's a saturday, i dont think there's a problem of wearing it.

I was greeted with a hindi song (kuch2 hota hai) sang by my colleagues who asked me to dance to the tune. :-) But, the annoying part is when one of the talk is on 'protocol'. The speaker said i didnt follow the protocol cos only the punjabi people can wear the suit for formal function. Other formal wears are acceptable for example baju kurung, kebaya, batik and so on.

I was irritated with the circular then. Why is it okay for me to wear baju kurung eventhough i'm not a malay but not the punjabi suit? At least my husband is an indian. So, the punjabi suit is closely related to me as compared to the baju kurung. Does this mean i can wear my traditional costume (kadazan) to school and teach? I think the circular is quite biased. Specially to Sabah and Sarawak people.

  3. You see! A bunch of morons running our education and even our so called protocol! Why then is it okay for non-European civil servants in Malaysia wearing tie and suit?

  4. The Punjabi suit is known as Salwar Kameez among Indians. It is not exclusive to the Punjabis. It is a common dress among women of Bangladesh, India and Pakistan and to some extent Afghanistan. More people wear it in the world compared to Baju Kurung, which make it more universal. Furthermore it is worn by Christians, Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs and Zoroastrians. So, what do they have to say about non-Malays donning the Baju Kurung.

  5. so much about promoting the muhibbah spirit in malaysia, what's wrong of donning other races' costums other than our own. Does it make us any less Chinese, Indian, Malay or even less a teacher, why dont understand.

i have got friend who is a teacher too, she always complains that most of the circulars are rather funny, absurd and sometimes bizzard.

We should not have protocol that kills that muhhibah spirit, we should have protocol that makes no sense at all.

  6. they r all idiots.. and yes i have seen the circular that says you can only wear your own ethnicity's costume but not any others unless it is the baju kurung, kebaya or batik. the reason being that they were trying to ban other women from wearing saris, unless they were truly indian. hahah talking about 1Malaysia, this is a joke eh! someone should club the number 1 on his head for him to wake up to reality! hehehehe

  7. So what would a person whose father is Sino-Dusun and mother an Indo-Arab wear? Should he or she just turn up naked because of the confusion!?

  8. haha...glad i'm not alone in this.
Audrey: they did say abt that 'sari' thing. hehe...they are just so sex-oriented. Talking abt 1malaysia, today i read in the paper the government's decision, to revert the teaching of science and maths from eng. to BM for government schools while the chinese and indians can teach the subjects in their own mother tongue, contradicts the idea of 1malaysia. Well, why would the govt allows other languages to be used? aren't they supposed to uphold the malay language? This is really ridiculous.

  9. Bea: that baju koprat (corporate) is a funny idea lah...they have this so-called uniform but the colour is green. We really look like a petronas or bumi hijau worker wearing it. So unattractive. It's the trend in most schools now. Different schools have choose different colours.
